The Department of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests of the Central Agricultural Laboratory, the predecessor of the Institute of Plant Protection, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), was established in 1931, mainly focusing on basic and applied research on the occurrence rules of pests, diseases and weeds, along with green control technology. Our work extends to crops such as rice, wheat, cotton, fruit trees, and vegetables in Jiangsu and throughout China.
The Institute has ten research teams respectively engaged in dryland farming diseases, plant viruses, pests of industrial crop and bio-control, plant bacteria and bio-control, rice pests, weeds and pesticides and rice diseases. Since the “13th Five-Year Plan”, the scientific research at the Institute has continued to develop, with the research area constantly expanded and the comprehensive strength significantly enhanced. The Institute has been granted nearly 100 new state-level research projects, including 17 national key R&D program projects, 3 public welfare industry special projects, 2 major special projects for transgenic technologies, and 51 natural science foundation projects, with the research funding of more than RMB 100 million. The Institute has also obtained over ten awards, including 2 second prizes of State Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 first prize of China Agricultural Science and Technology Award, 2 second prizes of China Agricultural Science and Technology Award, and 2 first prizes of Jiangsu Science and Technology Award. The Institute has applied for 187 patents, with 54 granted; formulated 7 national and industry standards; published143 SCI papers , of which 8 had an impact factor (IF) of above 10.
The Institute is also home to five research platforms: Scientific Observing and Experimental Station for Crop Pests (Nanjing), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, National Identification Station of Rice, Wheat and Cotton Registered Traits (Jiangsu), Jiangsu Plant Diseases Diagnosis and Testing Service, Jiangsu Engineering Research Center for Integrated Control Technology of Grain, Cotton, and Oil Crop Diseases, Pests and Weeds, Jiangsu Bio-pesticide Engineering Technology Research Center.
The Rice Pest Research Team has closely focused its research work on major rice pest groups such as stem borers and planthoppers. It focuses on pest population differentiation, genetic diversity, resistance dynamics and mechanisms, revealing the dominant factors of pest disasters; it develops efficient, long-term and safe comprehensive prevention and control technologies; innovates new biological pesticides and combines new high-efficiency and low-toxicity chemical pesticides, creating sustainable management countermeasures and technical systems that integrate pest quantity and quality control.
In recent years, the research team has presided over projects such as Post Scientist of Stem Borer Prevention and Control in National Rice Industry Technical System, National Science and Technology Support Plan project, the National Agricultural Achievements Transformation project, and the National Natural Science Foundation project. The team is the first undertaking unit to 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award; it is also the first undertaking unit to 1 first prize of Jiangsu Science and Technology Award; the team was authorized many invention patents. It has published many research papers in key journals at home and abroad such as Pest Management Science, Scientific Reports, Plos One, Pestide Biochemistry and Physiology, Acta Entomologica Sinica, Chinese Journal of Rice Science, etc.
The team is mainly engaged in the research work of pathogenic mechanism and disease prevention and control of plant pathogenic bacteria, incidence pattern and comprehensive prevention and control of pear tree diseases, identification of metabolites of biocontrol lysozyme, biosynthesis, genetic regulation and product creation. In the past five years, under the leadership of Prof. Liu Fengquan, the team members have presided over 29 projects/research topics above the provincial and ministerial levels with a research fund totaled up to RMB 23 million, including 1 project in National Key R&D Support Plan, 1 project on National Pear Industry Technology System Disease Post, 5 general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 projects of NSFC Youth Fund, 1 project of Jiangsu Province Key Research and Development Plan, 1 project on the National Postdoctoral Innovative Talents Plan, etc. The team won the first prize of Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Award, the first prize of Shen Nong China Agricultural Science and Technology Award and the first prize of China Society of Plant Protection Science and Technology Award. The team also published 53 SCI research papers in high-level academic journals, including one research paper each in the internationally renowned academic journals such as Cell Host & Microbe (IF14.946) and Nucleic Acids Research (IF 11.561); it’s authorized 8 national invention patents; formulated 6 Jiangsu provincial local standards; developed 1 provincial recommended technology.
The team has been engaged in research on the incidence pattern, disease monitoring and prevention and control technology of rice diseases for a long time, and is now the identification unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Jiangsu Province rice regional test characteristics. A disease resistance evaluation system for rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, sheath blight and false smut was established, and three local standards for Jiangsu Province were formulated. In recent years, important progress has been made in the research of pathogenic genes and their functions related to rice false smut and rice blast, as well as new disease prevention and control technologies.
We are interested in the role and dynamics of bacterial symbionts in whitefly and planthopper and how they affect their host’s interaction with its pathogens.
We are also interested in the coevolution of plant (such as transgenic cotton) and insect pest (such as cotton bollworm, common cutworm, whitefly, mirid bug et al.).
2.Biological Control of Insect Pests
We focus on biological control of insect pests, and develop microbial insecticides against whitefly, aphid, common cutworm et al. Other than microbial insecticides, we also develop biological control product against plant virus (such as tomato yellow leaf curl virus et al.).
The team focused on the occurrence, green prevention and control technology of soil-borne diseases caused by root-knot nematodes, Pythium and Fusarium.
The researches include as follows: disease diagnosis and intelligent early warning ; Pathogen-host interaction mechanism; R&D and creation of biological control products.
The team has presided over a number of scientific research projects above the provincial and ministerial level, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Industrial System Post Scientist Project, etc. The team has published more than 40 papers, obtained 7 patents, formulated 2 industry and local standards, and won 1 second prize of Jiangsu Science and Technology Progress Award.
The team carries out research on prevention and control of wheat head blight, sheath blight and stalk rot.
The research includes disease occurrence and epidemic analysis, pathogen population composition and drug resistance monitoring, disease-resistant varieties screening, high-efficiency and low-toxic fungicides, screening of biocontrol agents, research of fungal viruses with biocontrol potential, research and development of comprehensive prevention and control technologies for wheat diseases, etc.
The team mainly focuses on rice virus diseases, including rice stripe leaf blight, rice black-streaked dwarf disease, southern rice black-streaked dwarf disease, etc.
Relying on research platforms such as Jiangsu Provincial Plant Virus Disease Diagnostic and Testing Service Center, Jiangsu National Rice, Wheat and Cotton Variety Certification and Identification Station, and JAAS-IRRI Joint Laboratory, the research areas of the team include high-efficiency and accurate identification technology, discovery and identification of resistance resources and creation of new materials, resistance gene identification and breeding utilization, analysis of host resistance mechanism, etc.
The team has formulated 3 relevant national industry standards, 5 local standards, 17 authorized invention patents, and published more than 40 papers in well-known international journals such as Molecular Plant Pathology, Phytopathology, Rice, Frontiers in Microbiology, etc.
The team conducts focused researches on the production of major food crops and Crop disease of vegetables and fruits. It mainly carries out research work on pathogen diagnosis and detection, monitoring and early warning and prediction, transmission mechanism and pathogenesis mechanism, epidemic pattern and outbreak mechanism, host resistance mechanism and resistance gene breeding and utilization, comprehensive prevention and control technology, etc.

The Lab has published 1 monograph, over 200 academic papers, 50 of which SCI indexed papers; it is the winner to 3 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 7 first prizes of Jiangsu or ministerial science and technology progress awards, 6 second prizes and 5 third prizes of Jiangsu or ministerial science and technology progress awards; the lab was authorized 22 invention patents; it formulated 5 industry standards and 6 provincial and local standards.
