A new strawberry germplasm of ″bloomed red-flowers and gained white-fruits″ created by JAAS

Strawberry belongs to Rosaceae, which has perennial herb. There are about 25 species of strawberry resources in the world. The majority of strawberries have white flowers and cymes, which can bloom in multiple batches with a long flowering period. Strawberry fruit is fragrant and juicy, sweet with sour, with rich nutritional value. Strawberry has been cultivated for more than 200 years. From the beginning, the cultivation of white-fruit strawberry has gradually evolved into a pattern dominated by red-fruit cultivar in strawberry production, and the cultivation area of white-fruited strawberry is limited. Nowadays, with increased consumption demand, white-fruited strawberries have become more and more popular.

 

The research and development of featured strawberry, such as white-fruit strawberries with colored flowers, has important significance in making people’s life more colorful and meeting the growing needs from consumers. Based on that, the Strawberry Research Team of JAAS overturned the original understanding of strawberry plant "bloomed white-flowers and gained red-fruits", and creatively developed the excellent new strawberry germplasm of "bloomed red-flowers and gained white-fruits" for the first time in the world. The flowers are red, and the fruits are almost snow-white in this new strawberry germplasm, which brings high ornamental value.


As for fruit quality, it has not only a perfect conical shape with a little pink seed on the surface of fruit, but also has a light strawberry aroma. The creation of this new strawberry germplasm provides a model germplasm material and practical reference for exploring strawberry safflower traits and aggregating fruit white traits (obtained the National Invention Patent, patent number: ZL202010529832.8).

In Figure, we can observe that "Pink Panda" produces less fruit or even no-fruit at all. The "Pink Panda" safflower genes come from the distant genus red-flowered Potentilla, which makes it easy to fail to achieve fruit. "Danhua Xuemei" shows pretty pink flower and produces the snow-white fruit with red seeds on the fruit surface, which means that it is a tremendous progress in making the new strawberry germplasm in safflower traits and aggregating white fruit traits.
