Prof. Rajeev Varshney of International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) visited JAAS
Prof. Rajeev Varshney, a prominent legume expert and the founding director for center of excellence in International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), visited JAAS on August, 3, 2017.
Prof. Rajeev Varshney was elected Fellow of both India National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He has been mainly engaged in the researches of legumes genomics and molecular breeding. So far, he has published over 250 papers on international journals including Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Genetics, Nature Plant and PNAS.
During his visit, he was met by JAAS President, Prof. Yi Zhongyi. Director Wang Ran of Department of International Affairs extended warm welcome to him and briefed him on JAAS, especially on JAAS international cooperation policies. Prof. Rajeev Varshney said he was enchanted by the profound cultural heritage, wide-range disciplines, extensive intentional cooperation and beautiful scenery of JAAS. He also expressed his wish to cooperate in joint international programs, joint PhD training, and mutual visits.
After that, Prof. Rajeev Varshney gave an academic talk on “Translational genomics for legumes improvement” and had a guided tour to the central lab of JAAS.
In the afternoon, Prof. Rajeev Varshney had in-depth discussions with the researchers of the legume group and the peanut group of JAAS. Prof. Chen Xin, director of the Institute of Vegetable Crops of JAAS, chaired the discussion and proposed an intensive cooperation between ICRISAT and JAAS. Chen’s proposal was met with full consent by Prof. Rajeev Varshney, who offered the chances for JAAS researchers to his lab.
