Lucas Ferguson, an international exchange student at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of JAAS from the Mississippi State University, won the Gates Cambridge Scholarship this February.

On par with the Rhodes Scholarships which supports exceptional postgraduate students to study at the University of Oxford, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship enables postgraduate students outside of the U. K. to study at the University of Cambridge. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is awarded on the basis of the applicants’ intellectual ability, leadership capacity and social responsibility. The number of recipients of the scholarship from all around the world is less than 100 annually.

During the 6-week study at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of JAAS last summer, Lucas Ferguson conducted research on the diversity of an avian immunologic gene in Chinese poultry under the supervision of Prof. Li Yin. In an interview with Lucas, he said, “My experience in China impressed upon me the importance of international research and collaborations”.
