<p>JAAS Successfully Co-Sponsored the 1<sup>st</sup> Australia-China Forum of Agricultural and Food Sciences</p>

                                

Organized by Western Australian Chinese Scientists Association (WACSA) and co-sponsored by institutions including Murdoch University of Australia and Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), the 1st Australia-China Forum of Agricultural and Food Sciences was held successfully in Perth of Western Australia from February 2 to 4. Participants at the Forum included 24 Chinese representatives from Zhejiang University, Henan Agricultural University, Yangzhou University, Guangxi University, Jiangxi Agricultural University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and JAAS, and 45 Australian representatives from the Australian National University, University of Western Australia, Curtin University, the Department of Agriculture and Food of Western Australia and Murdoch University.

The Forum, co-chaired by Prof. Wujun Ma and Senior Researcher Rongchang Yang from Murdoch University, had 6 themes: genomics, biosecurity and food safety, Transgenetic plant and gene editing, crop sciences, animal sciences, and veterinary parasitology. As the keynote speaker, JAAS VP Prof. Xianjin Liu made a presentation entitled “An Overview of Quality and Safety Management of Agricultural Products in China”, Prof. Ran Wang spoke on “The New Weapon to Resistant Bacteria -Bacteriaphage and Its Endolysins”, Prof. Jie Yang on “Germplasm Innovation and Breeding in Rice Using CRISPR/Cas9 Technology”, Prof. Xu Zhang on “Identification of Expression QTL and Functional Characterization of Candidate Genes for Fusarium Head Blight Resistance in Wheat” and Prof. Yan Gao on “Distribution Patterns of Pathogen with Public Health Concerns in a River Receiving Domestic Wastewater for Agricultural Irrigation”.

This Forum was part of the inaugural Australia-China Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation which was participated by 3 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Representatives from the political circle of both China and Australia were invited to the opening ceremony. JAAS VP Liu made an enthusiastic speech at the closing ceremony. In addition to the Forum of Agricultural and Food Sciecnes, Prof. Jiaxiang Sun from JAAS made a presentation entitled “A Case Study: International Agriculture Research and Engagement in Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences(JAAS), China” at the Forum of Policies, Business and Entrepreneurs, and introduced the talents attraction policies of JAAS at the Special Forum on Young Professionals.

On the registration day of the Forum, VP Liu and other JAAS representatives paid a visit to Murdoch University and the two parties reached a consensus on establishing a joint lab for cereal crops and recruiting joint graduate students.
