Prof. Zhou Yijun’s Research Team Won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award
The National Science and Technology Award Conference was held in the People’s Great Hall of Beijing on Jan 9. General Secretary Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders including Premier Li Keqiang, Liu Yunshan (Member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee) and Zhang Gaoli (Vice Premier) attended the conference and conferred the awards to their winners. “Epidemiology and Sustainable Control Techniques of Rice Stripe Disease and Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Disease”, with JAAS as the primary research unit and Prof. Zhou Yijun at the Institute of Plant Protection of JAAS as the principal investigator, won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
At the beginning of this century, rice strip disease and black-streaked disease had an outbreak in regions adopting the cultivation mode of rice-wheat rotation, which affected over 15.3 million ha of planting area and posed serious threats to food production. Back then, scientists were clueless about the prevention and control of the two diseases due to the unclear cause and insufficient forecast techniques, which caused great loss in grain production and a panic among farmers. In 2004 alone, the planting area affected by the diseases in Jiangsu Province reached 1.6 million ha. Jiangsu provincial government attached great importance to this problem and made an urgent announcement concerning the prevention and control of the diseases. In order to tackle the problems such as the unclear cause of the sudden outbreak, and the insufficient surveillance and alarm techniques and efficient prevention and control technology, Prof. Zhou Yijun at JAAS, working together with scientist from other institutions including Zhejiang University, the Institute of Plant Protection at CAAS, the National Center for Agricultural Technology Extension, Nanjing Agricultural University, Jiangsu Provincial Station for Plant Protection, had devoted to solving the problems. With over a decade’s efforts, the scientists successfully found out the cause and damaging mechanism, ascertained the key time and space points for the prevention and control, created the SBPH viruliferous rate detection technology in field and built the surveillance and alarming system, and thus realized the early alarm and precise forecast of the diseases. And the spreading of the diseases were also successfully under control by the green and efficient prevention and control system, whose core technique was “cutting off virus transmission chain”.
