The outreach meeting of the project Industrial Technology System of Facility Vegetables (peppers & tomatoes), one of the key projects of Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF), was held in Siyang and Huai’an from June 6 to 8, 2013. JAAS Vice President Yu Wengui, Deputy Director Li Guofeng of Research Management Division, Prof. Tang Yuyin of the Institute of Vegetable Crops (IVC) and Principal Investigator Prof. Wang Shubin were invited to the meeting. More than 100 representatives from extension sectors in regional institutes and large pepper/tomato planting areas attended the meeting.

Liu Juan claimed that, JAAS tomato varieties Jinlingmeiyu, Sufen No.9 and pepper varieties Sujiao 14, Sujiao 15 and Sujiao 16 had already become the major greenhouse vegetable varieties in Siyang. They received welcome among local farmers and brought with the farmers considerable economic benefits. JAAS Vice President Yu Wengui spoke positively of the research results of the project. He suggested that scientists change separated and single techniques into systematic and integrative technology through research and development of the nine sub-programs. Chief project expert Prof. Wang Shubin demanded that the extension workers should make full use of the market competence of new varieties and reinforce the extension of relevant techniques.
The attendants visited Yuanrun Agricultural Sci-Tech Co.,Ltd., and Linfeng Vegetables Cooperative in Siyang Modern Agricultural Industry Park and observed different facility cultivation modes. They also went all the way to the demo park in Huai’an, which closely integrated the new pepper/tomato varieties and elite techniques. The attendants maintained that, the R&D and extension of the project not only accelerate the application of the latest research results, but also provide solid technical support for greenhouse vegetable development in Jiangsu Province.
