The 4th Jiangsu Elite Japonica Rice Taste & Breeding Seminar was held on January 26, 2012. It was hosted by Jiangsu Seed Industry Association and JAAS, and attended by 80 representatives from agricultural research institutes and universities, and regional research stations etc.. Deputy Director Xu Xuehong of Jiangsu Seed Management Station and Director Wang Cailin of the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS chaired the symposium, which was divided into two sessions, i.e., taste &evaluation of high-quality japonica rice varieties and japonica rice breeding research. JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong and Senior Agronomist Zhou Chunhe made important speeches during the symposium.
15 japonica rice varieties were cooked on site and tasted by the experts, and 3 among them won the first prize, i.e., Nanjing 9108, Su 10-100, Wuyun29154. Most varieties were similar to Wuyujing 3 in taste, which indicated a significant improvement of rice taste in Jiangsu.
Director Wang Cailin held the discussion with the attendants on rice breeding, which covered the increasingly severe outbreak of rice black-streaked dwarf virus and the diverse cultivation modes.
JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong spoke highly of the remarkable progress in rice breeding and at the same time emphasized a timely adjustment of research directions. Senior Agronomist Zhou Chunhe called for the breeding and extension of new japonica rice varieties with high quality, high yield, multi-disease resistances and wide adaptability in Jiangsu Province. Deputy Director Xu Xuehong of Jiangsu Seed Management Station added that, further cooperation between research institutes and enterprises should be enhanced.
