A delegation headed by Academician Wu Mingzhu of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) inspected melon cultivation and production in Sucheng, Suqian on October 27, 2012. The delegation was also joined by Directors Yi Hongping and Feng Jiongxin of Melon Research Center of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and accompanied by relevant directors of Sucheng District.

The delegation visited the fields to observe the planting and production situations in Sucheng Melon Industrial Park and held intensive discussions with relevant directors and technicians. They extended congratulations for Sucheng’s success in melon production and presented valuable suggestions in melon cultivation management, insect prevention and control, fertilization and irrigation, etc.. Meanwhile, Academician Wu spoke highly of JAAS’s practice in accelerating technical transfer and promoting specialty vegetable in Sucheng. She promised to strengthen cooperation with JAAS and to develop new melon varieties.

The melon varieties planted in Sucheng Melon Industrial Park are the improved varieties by Academician Wu in 2008. The planting adopts the new cultivation technique with “one strain with two vines, and one vine with one melon”, creating remarkable economic benefits. The mode is highly adaptable in North Jiangsu. At present, the melon varieties have been successfully planting with an extension area of over 600 mu and Sucheng has become the largest melon production station in East China.
