Nanjing 49 and Nanjing 5055, two elite rice varieties developed by JAAS passed the expert and peer assessments organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and were selected as two of the 18 super rice varieties for extension in 2014.
Nanjing 49, a new medium japonica rice variety with late maturity, passed Jiangsu provincial variety certification in 2012. Its whole growth period lasts 154 days and it’s suitable to be cultivated in Central Jiangsu and hilly areas around Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou. In the production test from 2009 to 2013, its average yield reached 8875.5, 8632.5, 12394.5, and 11955 kg per hectare. The quality of Nanjing 49 has reached National Elite Rice Standard-Level 1.
Nanjing 5055, a new japonica rice variety with good tasting quality, passed Jiangsu provincial variety certification in 2011. Its whole growth period lasts 155-160 days, so this late japonica rice variety with early maturity is suitable to be cultivated along the Yangtze River and Southern Jiangsu. In the production test from 2009 to 2013, its average yield reached 9217.5, 9565.5, 12289.5, and 12543 kg per hectare. The quality of Nanjing 5055 has reached National Elite Rice Standard-Level 3. In the 10th and 11th China High Quality Rice Fair and Jiangsu Elite Rice Competition, it won golden prizes for three successive years.
