The study of "UAV-based Intelligent Recognition System for Horticultural Crops Pest Prevention and Control” has made progress. The project was supported by Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF)” and undertaken jointly by the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Information at JAAS and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.
Between 16 and 17 of July, 2014, the research group gathering together with agricultural UAV manufacturer - Suzhou Green Agriculture Aviation Plant Protection Technology Co., Ltd., had the first successful test of the equipment in the rice fields of Linhu Town, and in the orchards of Dongshan Town, Wuzhong District of Suzhou City respectively. The UAV was equipped with home-developed spectral recognizer for crop pests and spectrum identification system for spraying pesticides. The airborne load of pesticides was up to 10-20 kg per travel. The equipment was reliable; and the sensors obtained spectrum information and triggered spray activities according to the design when the UAV flew at the height of about 3 meters above the crop canopy. The test achieved the prospective goals, which has provided the theoretical and technical support for its further development and application.
