On July 19th, 2014, JAAS held special public open day for the evaluation of new peach varieties. It was one of the series activities for Jiangsu agricultural featured characterization by the industry-school-research institution ties. The event was held at the headquarters of Jiangsu Rural Science and Technology Service Supermarket. Zhou Gongshen the deputy inspector of Science and Technology Department of Jiangsu Province, Hu Yidong, Director of Provincial Productivity Promotion Center, Huang Jun, vice president of JAAS, Chen Hongqiang, Director of the Rural Division of the Provincial Science and Technology Department attended the event. The opening ceremony was chaired by Huan Honghua, director of General Office of JAAS.
In the hot summer, a large quantity of peaches appears on the market. The rich "peach festival" was presented jointly by JAAS, Jiangsu Rural Science and Technology Service Supermarkets and Yangzi Evening News. More than 50 varieties of quality peaches were presented to the public, which were selected from Nanjing, Wuxi, Xuzhou, Changzhou, Zhenjiang and some other places. Over one thousand citizens from Nanjing came to enjoy the peach festival; one hundred of them were invited to be the public judges to taste the peach and choose the most tasteful peach from 12 markets selling of new varieties. The event was organized jointly by General Office, Personnel Department, Administration and Security Department, Retired Staff Administration Department, the Comprehensive Service Center, Exhibition Center and Jiangsu Rural Technology Service Supermarket.
At the exhibition count of Institute of Horticulture at JAAS, light small walnut called peach "ancestor" was favored by public with the history of more than one thousand years. In recent years, the institute has been breeding numerous good taste and good quality new varieties of peaches such as: "Xia cui", "Xia Hui No. 5," "Xia Hui No.6" etc., which took 60% Jiangsu peach acreage. "Jinxia Oil Pan", a combination of peach and nectarine, features without hair, has a sweet flavor and good quality. So it was awarded "public favorite peach" during the field competitions. The newly bred variety this year called “Jinling Huang Lu" yellow flesh peach has been improved the taste and quality, which is suitable for fresh eating.
In addition, the event also highlighted the introduction of cultivation models, rain-proof cultivation techniques and some other new technologies for the new varieties of peaches like Yuxia, Jinxia and Xiacui.
The experts from Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Institute of Horticulture JAAS were invited for the technical consulting and training. About 70 technicians from 25 peach growers, cooperatives and professional peach growing households participated in the event, enjoyed the presentations and consulted some technical problems.
