Prof. Li Bailian of University of California Riverside made an academic visit to the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment on Sep. 4, 2013. During his visit, he gave a lecture on Ecological Complexity and Sustainability, which aroused the interest of over 50 JAAS scientists and technicians.
Professor Li Bailian is an internationally-recognized authority in theoretical ecology and ecological modeling, one of the very few active Chinese scientists in the forefront of the International Ecology. He has published more than 200 papers in authoritative academic journals, including Nature, Science, PNAS, etc..
Stating from a general introduction of agricultural production situation in California, Li maintained that a stable ecosystem is the guarantee of agricultural production and human life. He explained the obscure ecology theories in simple language and their application in scientific research and real production. Finally, he talked about his research in the areas of agricultural non-point source pollution control and management, ecological safety evaluation of transgenic crops, ecological compensation mechanism, etc.. Humorous in language and original in content, his lecture was profound and thought-provoking. After the lecture, JAAS scientists held extensive discussions with Dr. Li.
