Machine-pickup Cotton Technology along the Yangtze River Basin Made a Breakthrough in Jiangsu

Mechanization signifies agricultural modernization, and the full mechanization of cotton production is the common dream of every cotton grower. The outreach meeting of machine-pickup cotton along the Yangtze River basin held in Dafeng on November 4 turned a new page in cotton production history in Jiangsu, and along the Yangtze River basin as well.

Academician Yu Shuxun, P.I. of National Cotton Industry System, pointed out that the successful trial of machine-pickup cotton suggested that fully mechanized cotton production can be realized in the rainy Yangtze River basin with machines instead of manual work. The labor cost is greatly reduced, and the comparative benefit of cotton-growing increases, which could guarantee the sustainable development of China’s cotton production.

JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong stressed that mechanized cotton-growing was the key to the development of cotton industry. The Institute of Industrial Crops of JAAS has made its initial achievement in this area. Next, breeding of cotton varieties suitable for machine-pickup and the cultivation technology should be the research focus. VP Chang wished to see the full mechanization of cotton production as soon as possible.

80 % of cotton in the field of one mu could be picked up in less than 15 minutes, which is almost 100 times more efficient than manual pickup. However, this is only the first step. There is still a long way ahead, from experiment to demonstration and promotion, etc..
