The Third Maize Diseases Prevention and Control Technology Symposium was successfully held in Nanjing from Nov. 8 to 11, 2013. The theme of the symposium was “aiming to the maize industry development and making new breakthroughs in pests control”.
The symposium was hosted by National Maize Industrial Technology System and the Institute of Plant Protection of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), and undertaken by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and JAAS. More than 150 representatives from National Maize Industrial Technology System, comprehensive test stations, provincial maize expert groups and major research programs attended the symposium. JAAS Vice President Zhou Jiannong was also invited.
Senior experts in pests control and prevention from from CAAS, Nanjing Agricultural University, National Agro-technology Extension Center and JAAS discussed pests occurrence trends and control technology innovations after their separate academic reports. Among them, the representative of Jiangsu Comprehensive Test Station made a report on breeding of new maize varieties with resistances to major diseases. With the extension of mechanization, high density planting technology and crop straw returning to the field, tremendous changes have taken place as for the occurrence of pests diseases and weeds. Some new technical problems and demands are emerging. The directors and experts agreed that: more efforts should be made in the R&D of new cultivars with resistances to diseases, in the monitoring and warning of severe diseases, in the investigation of disease occurrence rules as well as in the development of efficient and practical control technologies which fit modern farming.
