Prof. Jiang Quan, chief scientist of National Peach Industry & Technology system, Prof. Ye Zhengwen, PI of postharvest and processing of peach and director of Crop and Forest & Fruit Tree Research Institute of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) and Prof. Xie Ming of Hangzhou Comprehensive Test Station and director of the Institute of Horticulture of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) made an academic visit to Jiangsu from June 17 to 18, 2011.
Despite the heavy rain on June 17, Prof. Jiang visited JAAS and tasted the peach products of elite varieties and single plant fruit bred by JAAS. On June 18, accompanied by Prof. Yu Mingliang, director of the Institute of Horticulture of JAAS, Prof. Ma Ruijuan, principal investigator of flower fruit management, Associate Prof. Zhu Hongfeng, head of Nanjing Experiment Station, Prof. Jiang toured Xuyi Economic Forest Orchard in Yuhuang Mountain, the experiment station of the Institute of Horticulture. Early-maturing nectarine variety "Zijinhong No. 1" bred by JAAS is near its end of maturing and suitable for planting in the Yangtze River Delta. Zijinhong No. 1 displays its good taste with crisp, sweet and juicy. Some tourists were collecting the peach fruits and saying the peaches were good in both appearance and taste. During his tour, Prof. Jiang noticed the peach tree gummosis. After inquiring the orchard workers, he concluded that the gummosis resulted from improper application of herbicide. A deserted mountain before, Yuhuang Mountain is now used for fruit trees planting after reclamation. However, due to the remaining rocks, the workers encountered difficulties in orchard management and mainly used herbicides to kill the weeds. In light of this, Prof. Jiang presented some precautionary suggestions for future management.
After the tour, Prof. Jiang had a discussion with the directors of Xuyi Resources Development Bureau and visited agriculture-related enterprises.
