New strawberry varieties and techniques accomplished by JAAS won prizes

 
The program to develop new facility strawberry varieties and to extend new cultivation techniques accomplished by the Institute of Horticulture of JAAS won the second prize in the Sixth Jiangsu Agriculture Technology Extension Meeting.
 
Supported by Jiangsu Agriculture Independent Innovation Fund and coordinated by five local extension sectors and strawberry associations, the program has extended four strawberry varieties with plant variety protection, including Xuemi, Ningyu, Ningfeng and Zijin No.1.
 
Targeting at the existing problems in strawberry breeding and cultivation, including low diversity of varieties, low-level technology of seedling planting and care and low standardization of cultivation techniques, the program has altered the situation of long-term reliance on imported varieties. The virus-free strawberry and high quality seedling techniques have changed the traditional seedling methods. The comprehensive soil sterilization techniques incorporating calcium cyanamide, solar energy and dry-wet soil rotation have thoroughly removed the continuous cropping obstacles of strawberry.
 
The extension of low-cost nonwoven cloth mulch, connective plastic greenhouse, simple sunlight greenhouse and the techniques of drip irrigation under mulch and pest control has changed the traditional farming modes, contributed to large-scale strawberry cultivation and increased strawberry production in Jiangsu Province.
