Prof. García Pilar and Dr. Beatriz, experts of bacteriophage from Asturies Institute of Dairy Products of Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), made an academic visit to the Institute of Food Safety and Monitoring Technology from June 19 to 25, 2011. They exchanged their opinions and ideas on the function of bacteriophage in food pathogen control with JAAS scientists and technicians.
Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is a leading research institute in Spain (counterpart of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Asturies Institute of Dairy Products is mainly engaged in food safety studies. Prof. García Pilar and Dr. Beatriz have dedicated to the research in the application of bacteriophage in biological control of food pathogens. Their laboratories have successfully extracted broad host range staphylococcus aureus phage and active protease with strong cleavage activity.
During their visit, the two experts gave a lecture "Bacteriophages: New Weapons in Food Safety", shared their research progresses on bacteriophage and introduced the application and development trends of bacteriophage in biological control of food pathogens. They also made analysis on the research perspectives of phage endolysins and demonstrated the staphylococcus aureus phage control in dairy products of bacteriophage and phage endolysins with large experiment data.
In the laboratories, the two experts carried out separation and induction of staphylococcus aureus phage in milk with JAAS scientists and technicians. They also gave some comments and suggestions on laboratory research plans. During the discussion, both sides drafted cooperation intent agreements on staphylococcus aureus phage, which will accelerate JAAS research in bacteriophage and lay foundation for the development of new bio-fungicide.
