The Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment of JAAS held an outreach meeting to release their latest research in straw utilization on June 30, 2011. Together with the meeting is the signing ceremony of related patent right transfer and authorization.
The patent of straw flowerpot production has been authorized for use to Nanjing Houchong Company, Ltd and the patent of straw decomposition additives has been transferred to Nanjing Ningliang Bio-fertilizer Company, Ltd, which marked the industrialization and large-scale extension of the two technology patents.
Vice Inspector Li Wenlin and Director Shi Zeping of Nanjing Agriculture Commission, Director Li Qi of Nanjing Science and Technology Bureau and journalists were invited to the meeting. JAAS President Yan Shaohua, Vice President Yu Wengui, Deputy Director Zhang Chuxian of the Technical Service Division, Deputy Director Huan Honghua of the Research Management Division, Director Chang Zhizhou and CPC Secretary Zhou Weixing of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment as well as relevant scientists and technicians attended the meeting.
The annual yield of crop straws in Jiangsu amounts to more than 4,000 tons and 1/3 of them have been abandoned or burnt, which resulted in substantial resource waste and severe environment pollution. Therefore, how to make full use of crop straws has become a critical question in the recent agriculture development and environment protection. Supported by the grant from Jiangsu Agriculture Independent Innovation Fund and undertaken by the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment, JAAS research in crop straw utilization has achieved great progress after a lot of surveys and experiments.
The straw flowerpots are the latest research result of the research group of agricultural wastes utilization of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment. The flowerpots can keep its shape and color during the cultivation of ornamental flowers and plants. After the flowering period, the pots can still be reutilized or degraded with no residues.
The straw decomposition additives can help to quickly degrade the organic wastes under average temperature. The additives can also help to release the nutrients, optimize soil microorganisms, stimulate plant growth, increase soil organic matters, strengthen plant resistance and reduce fertilizer use.
On the other hand, the research group of efficient rice and wheat cultivation of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment connects agricultural techniques and machinery. The group improved the traditional rice combine harvester, invented wheat swaying sowing machine and after-seeding pressing device and therefore increased mechanization of straw returning. From 2009 to 2011, these devices have received warm welcome in the demonstration areas in Yangzhong City and will probably realize technical transfer in the near future.
