JAAS scientists visit Xinjiang province to highlight Xinjiang-aid initiative

To achieve the Xinjiang-aid initiative goal of revitalizing and modernizing Xinjiang agriculture, Prof. Yuan Jianhua, deputy director of the Institute of Food Crops (IFC) of JAAS led a delegation of maize scientists to Yili Agricultural Sciences Institute (YASI) in Xinjiang on April 25, 2011.
 
The Institute of Food Crops (IFC) undertakes two science and technology Xinjiang-aid projects and they are Breeding and Development of High Quality Rice in Yili Valleys and Breeding of Sweet or Waxy Maize Varieties.
 
Since launched the projects in 2010, IFC and YASI have closely cooperated with each other in germplasm exchange, project application, and generation advance in Hainan. IFC has provided YASI with some elite rice and maize germplasm, breeding methods. Scientists in IFC observed the properties of the varieties provided by YASI in Hainan and created some hybrids, all of which are to be observed and selected in Nanjing and Yili respectively for the development of new varieties that could adapt to ecological environment in Yili.
 
The delegation had a guided tour to the experiment station of YASI and an in-depth discussion with the chief scientists on rice and maize breeding.
