JAAS and Hubei Guoke Hi-Tech Company jointly held a meeting and field observation for new canola variety—Ningza 19 in Tongzhou, Nantong on May 20, 2011. Ningza 19 is a cultivar developed by JAAS and supported by National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program) and Independent Innovation Program Funded by Jiangsu Provincial Finance.
Representatives from seed companies and agents in Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang as well as some experts of the Canola Technical Committee of Jiangsu Crop Society attended the meeting. There were altogether 80 present, including JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong, Deputy Director Wang Jin of Nantong Agriculture Commission, Director Chen Zhishi of JAAS Intellectual Property Rights Division and Director Qi Cunkou of the Institute of Industrial Crops (IIC) of JAAS.
The attendants had a guided tour to the high yield plot of Ningza 19 in Sanyu Town in Tongzhou and a meeting for discussion after the filed observation. During the meeting, Prof. Pu Huiming briefed on the crop properties and experiment results of Ningza 19. Representatives from Sanyu Agriculture Company, Dongtai and Dafeng plant stations reported the yields of their testing areas respectively. According to the testing results, the maximum yield of this year may exceed 300 kilograms per mu.
Multi years of field tests show that Ningza 19 exhibits desirable characteristics, including strong resistance to lodging and stalk break, desirable disease recovery rate and high yield. The attendants were in all agreement that, as a high quality hybrid canola variety with high yield, high oil concentration and strong resistance to plant diseases, Ningza 19 was suitable to be planted in the winter canola planting areas south of Huai River in the lower reaches of Yangtze River. Ningza 19 has broad extension prospects and may become the main cultivar in these regions.
During the meeting, JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong made important speeches. He spoke highly of the research progress made by IIC and proposed to facilitate the extension of Ningza 19. As for the promotion of canola industry development, he suggested that IIC should tackle the key scientific and technological difficulties and actively breed new canola varieties with high oil concentration and create cultivars suitable for a mechanized farming system.
