JAAS New Japonica Rice Variety Ning 9108 Won National Good-Taste Rice

Ning 9108, a new japonica rice variety developed by the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, won the 2nd prize of good eating quality in China. JAAS received this good news from the Ninth Japonica Rice Development Forum and National Good-Taste Rice Convention, which was held in Beijing from August 21 to 22, 2011.

The Ninth Japonica Rice Development Forum and National Good-Taste Rice Convention was sponsored by North Rice Science and Technology Society and coordinated by Satake Manufacturing(Japan) Co., Ltd. Director Wang Cailin of the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS attended the meeting as the head of the evaluation committee. The Convention exhibited a total of 20 varieties, taking Wuyujing No.3 as the standard variety and Japanese high quality rice variety Yueguang as compared variety. Ning 9108 ranked fourth among the 20 varieties.

Ning 9108 is a hybrid middle japonica rice variety with late maturity. It combines the high grain quality of its female parent Wuyunjing 7 and tenderness of its male parent Kanto 194. After quality selections and molecular marker-assisted selections of rice stripe virus resistance and half-waxy genes, Ning 9108 was successfully bred by the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, featured by tight plant type, desirable maturity and lodging resistance. The length of the strain is about 16 cm; total grains amount to 140 to 150, at the maturing rate of 90% and thousand grain weight is about 26 g. In the small area trials in 2009, the total yield is 572 kg, 14% higher than Yangfu Rice 8 and 6.5% higher than Huai Rice 9. In the large area test in 2010, the average yield per mu is 553 kg, 10% higher than Yangfu 8 and 8% higher than Huai Rice 9. In the preparatory test of all late-maturing japonica rice varieties in 2010, the average yield per mu is 629.1 kg, 12.5% higher than Huai Rice 9, ranking fourth among all competing varieties. In the regional test in 2011, Ning 9108 exhibited desirable resistances to rice stripe virus, rice blast and bacterial blight. The cooked rice is delicate, crystal, tender and smooth.

The Institute of Food Crops of JAAS has developed new japonica rice varieties Nanjing 46 and Nanjing 5055 in 2008 and 2011, a middle-maturing late japonica and an early-maturing late japonica, and both are adaptable in Jiangsu Taihu Lake, south Jiangsu and coastal areas. Ning 9108 is selected again as one of national good-taste rice after Nanjing 46 and Nanjing 5055, 2 to 3 days earlier of maturing than Huai Rice 9 and a late-maturing middle japonica. It is adaptable in Huaihe area to the south and laid a solid foundation for good taste japonica rice development in Jiangsu central area.
