Seminar on Jiangsu Canola Industry & Technology

The 2011 Seminar on Jiangsu Canola Industry & Technology was held in Yangzhou from August 18 to 19, 2011. The seminar was hosted by the Institute of Industrial Crops of Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), Jiangsu Consultation Station for Crop Science and Cultivation, Canola Special Committee of Jiangsu Crop Science Society, and undertaken by Lixiahe Institute of Agricultural Sciences. More than 80 directors, experts, technicians and graduates from the hosting institutions, Nanjing Agricultural University, Yangzhou University, and other agricultural sectors and cultivation stations attended the seminar. JAAS Vice President Zhao Xihua and Deputy Director Huan Honghua of Research Management Division were invited to the meeting.
 

 
The seminar was chaired by Director Qi Cunkou of the Institute of Industrial Crops of JAAS and Deputy Director Chen Xiulan of Lixiahe Institute of Agricultural Sciences made a welcome speech. JAAS Vice President Zhao Xihua stressed that the meeting is actually a discussion on the combination of science and technology and canola production. With the decreasing canola production areas, it is important for the scientist and technicians to communicate with the first-line farmers and extension commissioners. He also held an in-depth discussion with the attendants on increasing canola yield, promoting mechanization, breeding canola for both oilseed and vegetable use and developing agro-tourism. He encouraged the scientists and technicians to accelerate the breeding of new canola varieties on one hand, and to speed up their extension on the other hand.
 
Prof. Tu Jinxing of Central China Agriculture University, PI of canola genetics and molecular,  made a speech on molecular mechanism of canola recessive GMS and application in heterosis; Deputy Director Wang Longjun of Jiangsu Consultation Station for Crop Science and Cultivation made a detailed analysis on Jiangsu canola industry and production situation; Prof. Leng Suohu of the School of Agriculture of Yangzhou University reported his research on yield losses of canola under fully mechanized harvest and Director Qi Cunkou of the Institute of Industrial Crops of JAAS detailed his analysis on canola breeding goals during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan Period. The seminar is a complete success and meets the expectations of all the attendants.
