The Agriculture S&T (Science & Technology) Breakthrough Programme Project “Safe and Simple Cultivation Techniques Integration and Industrial Demonstration of Late Japonica Rice Variety Nanjing 44 with Good Quality and Resistance to Stripe Diseases” passed acceptance checks on July 13, 2011. The project was undertaken by the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS and evaluated by experts organized by the Department of Science, Technology and Education of MOA (Ministry of Agriculture, P.R. China).
Initiated in 2008, the project aimed to solve the problems of Jiangsu’s lack in late japonica rice varieties with good quality and disease resistances and relevant cultivation techniques. The new rice variety Nanjing 44 has the properties of strong resistance to stripe diseases, good grain quality, stable yield and wide extension prospects.
With the support of Jiangsu Agriculture Commission and other administrative sectors and under the guidance of the Programme Supervision Committee and chief scientists, JAAS scientists and technicians improved the regulations of Nanjing 44 original seed production, high yield production, mechanized transplanting and throwing transplantation. The project established a 20-hectare original seed production station and a 3,333-hectare improved seed production station. The total demonstration area now exceeds 36,667 hectares and will cover 738,000 hectares before the end of the project.
The technical service of the project includes 3 on-site observations and over 50 trainings on fine variety cultivation, safe and simple cultivation, high yield and precision cultivation and rice industry development, etc. More than 6,000 farmers and agents have been trained and over 300, 000 handouts and brochures have been distributed. The extension rate of related technology has reached more than 95%.
Nanjing 44 is approved by MOA as super rice variety. It is one of the main extension varieties and the dominant late japonica rice variety in Jiangsu. The average yield per hectare reaches 10,836 kilograms in the demonstration area and 9,240 kilograms in the fields, with the increases of 2,586 kilograms and 990 kilograms. The nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency increases by 6%. The chemical fertilizer and water consumptions reduce by 30% and 20%. The project has both economic benefits and good social impact.
The project promotes the extension of Nanjing44, fulfilled the purpose of creating a new variety, maturing a technology, making a brand, upgrading an enterprise and enriching the farmers and realized the aim to make breakthroughs in core technology optimization, relevant techniques integration, large scale extension and rice industry upgrade.
