Institute of Food Crops: inspect the projects supporting Xinjiang through science and technology

Prof. Wang Cailin of the Institute of Food Crops (IFC), Deputy Director Huan Honghua of the Research Management Division, maize expert Prof. Yuan Jianhua and other JAAS directors made an academic visit to Yili Institute of Agricultural Sciences (YIAS) from August 24 to 26, 2011.

During the visit, IFC and YIAS made separate program reports on Breeding and Development of High-quality Rice Varieties in Yili Valley Areas and Breeding of New Waxy and Sweet Corn Varieties. Both sides talked about the current situation and research progress of their institutes, visited to the fields to observe the growth and characteristics of the crops under cooperation and held an in-depth discussion for further experiment plans.

Since the launching of projects supporting Xinjiang through science and technology in 2011, IFC has provided YIAS with all-round technical support, including germplasm exchange, project application, off-season breeding and generation advance in Hainan, etc. In 2011, 8 rice varieties (series), 63 maize varieties (combinations) have been planted in Yili for testing. IFC experts also helped YIAS to obtain 2 important research projects in Yili, with a grant of 400, 000 yuan. In September, 2011, rice and maize experts of YIAS will go all the way to JAAS for further communication and cooperation in molecular breeding and selection.

JAAS experts also had a guided tour to the Institute of Food Crops of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and made an observation of the rice and maize testing fields. Both sides reached the agreements on germplasm resources, breeding resources and information exchange, which laid a solid foundation for future cooperation.
