Institute of Food Crops: interdisciplinary academic exchanges held for young scientists and technicians

 

In order to promote interdisciplinary communication, expand research horizons and improve the skills of independent thinking and working among the young scientists and technicians, CPC Party Branch, China Youth League Branch and Labor Union of the Institute of Food Crops organized scientists and technicians aged below 35 to visit the Institute’s experiment station in Luhe Animal Sciences Station (LASS) on July 1, 2011. Nearly 30 scientists and technicians participated in this activity and they focused their visit on the field observation of maize, sweet potato and minor grain crops.
 
Deputy Director Yuan Jianhua of the Institute of Food Crops introduced to the young scientists and technicians the general situation of the testing fields where the Institute of Food Crops performed experiments. The young scientists and technicians of the research groups of maize breeding, sweet potato breeding and minor grain crops germplasm reported separately in the fields their research projects, progresses, tasks and difficulties.
 
Maize haploid induction introduced by Meng Qingchang, heterosis utilization in waxy maize breeding introduced by Zhao Wenming, new sweet potato cultivation techniques by Jia Zhaodong and peanut hybrid breeding techniques by Shen Yi all aroused the keen interests from the scientists and technicians, who had a heated discussion with active participation of all the attendants.
 
This activity is one of the means of the Institute of Food Crops to promote academic exchanges between young scientists and technicians and accelerate the cultivation of talents. The Institute will continue to organize this type of activities.
