Exploring for new innovation directions and focuses for Jiangsu vegetable crops and discussing the adjustment and construction of vegetable disciplines during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, Jiangsu cooperative organization for vegetable crops innovation(preparatory) held a seminar from December 10 to 12, 2010 in Yangzhou. The seminar aimed to promote the mutual understanding and cooperation between vegetable research institutions and relevant enterprises, and to construct a new innovation system of vegetable crops in Jiangsu Province.
The seminar was jointly hosted by the Scientific Research Division and the Institute of Vegetable Crops of JAAS, undertaken by Lixiahe Agriculture Sciences Institute. Over 90 representatives from 25 units including the Institute of Vegetable Crops, Yangzhou University, Jinling Technology College, regional institutes of JAAS, vegetable research institutes from Xuzhou, Huai'an, Nantong, Suzhou, Lianyungang and Zhenjiang, Haimen Institute of Agriculture, Jiangsu Seed and Seedling Technology Company, Ltd., Yangzhou Bangda Vegetable Technology Company, Ltd.
Vice President Chang Youhong of JAAS, Deputy Director Wang Tieshan of the Countryside Office in Jiangsu Science and Technology Department, Associate Dean Liu Weidong of Jinling Technology College, Associate Dean Chen Xuehao of the School of Horticulture and Plant Protection of Yangzhou University, Deputy Director Huan Honghua of the Scientific Research Division of JAAS and other relevant directors attended the seminar.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Deputy Director Chen Xin of the Institute of Vegetable Crops of JAAS. Ma Tanbin, director of Lixiahe Agriculture Sciences Institute, made a welcome speech and a brief introduction about the current situation, existing problems and development prospects of the vegetable industry in Yangzhou. He suggested that the institutions and scientists in the vegetable industry should strengthen cooperation and strive for great progress. After his speech, Deputy Director Huan Honghua of the Scientific Research Division gave introductions about the Special Funds for Agriculture Independent Innovation in Jiangsu. He hoped that the vegetable scientific institutions should spare no efforts to work together, and take full advantage of the platform of Jiangsu cooperative organization for vegetable crops innovation. Director Yang Xingping of the Institute of Vegetable Crops introduced in his speech the establishment of the cooperative organization. He suggested that the relevant vegetable institutions seize the opportunity to narrow the technology gap and tackle key problems according to the status quo of vegetable industry in Jiangsu province. In this way, the institutions can promptly enhance their popularity and market share, set up strategic alliances for technology innovations of the vegetable industry efficiently and make contributions to the consistency, stability and coordination of the local vegetable industry. Twenty-two representatives from different working units exchanged their views during and after the seminar.
After the seminar, JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong made a passionate speech in the discussion meeting. He spoke highly of the necessity and urgency of the establishment of Jiangsu cooperative organization. The vegetable industry has now become the biggest planting industry in Jiangsu province. All the scientists and technicians could consider the industry needs as the foremost needs in the project orientation. At the same time, the research should be kept advanced and foreseeing, give full play to the functions of Jiangsu cooperative organization for vegetable crops innovation. In Jiangsu, some high-end vegetable varieties relied too much on foreign resources. In order to change this situation, Prof. Chang stressed that the relevant institutions should accelerate the R&D of high quality vegetable varieties and the techniques with independent intellectual property, adaptability to local cultivation conditions and high competence.
The attendants visited the technology demo park for vegetable crops in Jiangdu, Yangzhou and Wuqiao Vegetable Industry Park.
