International Symposium for Berry Health Food R& D and Market Development, jointly sponsored by Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the University of Manitoba (Canada), was held at JAAS from May 21 to 24, 2010. More than 40 directors and experts from the University of Manitoba, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Botany of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin University of Commerce and Nanjing Agriculture University attended this symposium.
Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and other berries are called the third-generation super-fruits with nutrition and healthy function. Jiangsu province is one important production base of strawberry, blackberry and blueberry in China. Jiangsu Province plants 10,000 hectares of strawberry with annual yield of 180,000 tons, which is mainly distributed in the Donghai, Ganyu, Changzhou, Jurong, and so on. In addition, blackberry and blueberry are mainly in Lishui, Liyang, and other hilly areas with nearly 2,000 hectares of cultivated area and over 10,000 tons of output. The products are exported to Japan and Europe.
Vice President Chang Youhong of JAAS delivered a welcome speech on the opening ceremony of this symposium. He introduced the general situation, especially discipline construction of JAAS and wished a success for this technology exchange.
Prof. Trust Beta from the University of Manitoba, representative of the Canada delegation, expressed his thanks to our hospitality and made an academic report on berry health food research. Prof. Huang Kaihong, director of the Institute of Farm Product Processing of JAAS, Professor Alphonsus Utioh from the University of Manitoba and other experts gave wonderful talks.
After the symposium, the Canadian delegation visited the Institute of Farm Product Processing of JAAS, Nanjing Fujiabian Agricultural Demonstration Park as well as Huangchuan Strawberry Base in Donghai County.
