Rice Nanjing 46 won national gold prize

JAAS received good news from the Sixth National Japonica Rice Convention held in Changchun from March 8 to 10, 2011. Nanjing 46, a new japonica rice variety developed by Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, won the gold prize. The convention selected two gold prize rice varieties—Yimuhu (Japanese japonica rice "Love At First Sight") and Nanjing 46. Suxing Siji, the trade name of Nanjing 46, won both the awards for good taste and high grain quality.

Recently, JAAS and Dongfang Grain and Oil Supply Company of Jiangsu Grains Group are cooperating in commercialization of high grain quality rice varieties. In 2010, the production adopted an order-based model of "company + experiment station + farmer households". JAAS purchased 3,000 tons of Nanjing 46 grains in Zhangjiagang high quality rice production base with a 20% higher price than the average market price. Nanjing 46, with the Brand Suxing Siji, successfully gains access to the high-end rice market, and often falls short of demand. To further ensure the quality of Nanjing 46, the establishment of barcode traceability system is under construction. Scanning the barcode with electronic readers, consumers can know the chemicals and fertilizers applied through the whole production process.

At present, Nanjing 46 is sold only at Nanjing Aqua City, a popular market place in Nanjing. The package bag is printed with the trademark Suxing Siji, the Chinese characters of Nanjing 46, the portrait of Dr. Wang Cailin (the breeder) and nutrition facts, etc. It is estimated that Nanjing 46 will be sold and consumed by the supermarkets, restaurants and hotels this year.

Nanjing 46 is a hybrid japonica rice with middle mature and is adaptable in Shanghai and South Jiangsu. It exhibits desirable characteristics such as excellent grain quality and taste, rice stripe virus resistance and a high yield of more than 600 kilograms per mu. In 2010, the grain purchase price was 3.6 yuan (RMB) per kilogram and the total output value per mu amounted to 2,160 yuan and even increased to 4,000 yuan after processing. Because of the excellent grain quality and economic benefits, Nanjing 46 grains are now favorite rice grains of many grain processing factories across nation. The planting area of Nanjing 46 in Suzhou and Shanghai exceeds 500, 000 mu and the seeds always fall short of demand.
