JAAS helps develop Suqian City into a modern eco-agriculture demonstration city

Aimed at promoting the construction of a modern eco-agriculture demonstration city (MEDC), a city design & construction symposium sponsored by JAAS and Suqian municipal government, was held in Nanjing on February 14. The meeting is a part of mission of a Jiangsu provincial government proposal --Several Opinions on Making Greater Breakthroughs for Suqian's Development. The meeting proposed the foundation for the agricultural technology cooperation between JAAS and Suqian, and provided strong technological support for the construction of an MEDC in Suqian. Vice Governor Huang Lixin attended the meeting and gave a keynote speech. At the meeting, Zhang Xinshi, secretary of CPC Suqian municipal committee, introduced the economic and social development of the Suqian city and the work for agriculture, countryside and farmers (ACF). Vice Governor Huang said that signing of the agreement was a concrete measure of implementing the decisions made at the two sessions of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress (JPPC), and materialized Jiangsu provincial government's support for Suqian to make greater breakthroughs. Ms. Huang pointed out that Suqian municipal government always attached great importance to the work on ACF, and both ACF and modern agriculture showed great development momentum, and with the scale and status of some of Suqian's facility agriculture projects taking the lead in Jiangsu, it was inspiring to hear that it planned to construct the first MEDC in Jiangsu and make it influential nationwide. And she noted that as a top-ranked academy in Jiangsu and China as a whole, JAAS had been making progress in various research areas in recent years: its research focus was shifted from grain, cotton and oil crops to the technological innovation; its innovative research capabilities were strengthened by extending the industrial chain from production to production, processing and distribution; it utilized the integrated research resources in Jiangsu to establish the innovation system for agricultural technologies. She stressed that JAAS was home to high-quality varieties, advanced technologies, talented scientists and integrated resources and its cooperation with Suqian to facilitate the construction of an MEDC would be beneficial to the development of both parties. And she expressed her hope for JAAS to turn Suqian into a demonstration base of efficient eco-agriculture in Jiangsu, provide Suqian with high-quality varieties, advanced technologies and rewarding projects, encourage the integration of industry, education and research, and further improve the innovative capabilities.

Vice Governor Huang also stressed that the two parties should enhance the technological cooperation and realize mutual benefit and win-win, and to achieve that: a scientific development plan for Suqian’s efficient eco-agriculture should be set forth and the parties should be clear about the development goals and industrial layout; rapid development of facility agriculture and industries with agricultural characteristics should be realized, and the industrialization level of agriculture be raised; the parties should attach great importance to the development of ecological agriculture, explore new production models combining planting with cultivation, and improve the efficiency of agricultural resources utilization; the parties should create agricultural brands, develop more organic food, produce popular agricultural products and enhance their market competitiveness.
