Rice Nanjing 5055 Selected as National Good-Taste Japonica Rice

JAAS received good news from the Sixth National Japonica Rice Convention recently. Nanjing 5055, a new japonica rice variety developed by Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, has been selected again as one of national good-taste rice after Nanjing 46, an elite rice cultivar.
 
Similar to Nanjing 46, Nanjing 5055 is also a hybrid rice variety. It combines the high grain quality of its female parent Wujing 13 and the tenderness of its male parent Kanto 194. After grain quality selections and molecular marker-assisted selections of rice stripe virus resistance and half-waxy genes, Nanjing 5055 was successfully developed by JAAS breeders and granted national new variety protection in 2010. The growth stage of Nanjing 5055, an early-maturing late japonica rice variety, lasts for 158 days. This variety was officially registered by Jiangsu Committee on Variety Registration in 2011, and is adaptable in Jiangsu coastal areas and those with high and medium soil fertility in south Jiangsu.
