A delegation headed by Prof. Jiang Lin, director of the Center for Fruit Trees and Tea of Qiangdao Institute of Agricultural Science and principal investigator (PI) for rootstock and seedling growth in the peach breeding lab under the national peach industrial system, visited the Institute of Horticulture (IF) of JAAS. Prof. Yu Mingliang, director of IF and the peach breeding lab, Prof. Ma Ruijuan, PI of flower and fruit management, and Associate Prof. Song Hongfeng, director of Nanjing Comprehensive Experiment Station received the five-member delegation.
The research on rootstocks requires long-term efforts, and in China there are a few scientists conducting research on peach rootstocks. Wild and mountain peach seedlings have been widely used as rootstocks for peach in China, whose research in this field lags far behind other countries such as the United States, France and Japan. Having constructed Nanjing peach germplasm nursery as a part of the national fruit germplasm nursery in China, IF has collected some domestic and foreign cultivars for peach rootstocks and set aside research fields for doing comparative tests on rootstocks. The delegation visited the two research fields and had discussions about gummosis resistant germplasm and the selection of rootstocks.
