Rice Variety Nanjing 45 Selected as 2011 super rice for extension by Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, PR.China)

After Liangyoupeijiu and Nanjing 44, two elite rice cultivars, Nanjing 45 passed the experts' evaluation of the Ministry of Agriculture and is selected as one of the nine super rice cultivars for extension in 2011.

Nanjing 45 was developed by JAAS breeders and recognized by the provincial government as a new japonica rice variety of high grain quality and late maturity in 2009. In the field test and demonstration, it exhibited desirable features of good quality, high yield and multi-resistance to bacterial leaf blight, rice blast and stripe virus disease. It can be planted as single-season rice in the hilly rice production areas in central Jiangsu, Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou and the adjacent provinces with the same latitude. In the regional tests of late maturity japonica rice varieties of Jiangsu Province, the yield of Nanjing 45 has grown at an average annual rate of 10% higher than that of the control variety for the past two years. The grain quality of Nanjing 45 has reached one of the highest international standards. The cooked rice is tender and smooth, with good color, flavor and taste.

In 2010, JAAS set aside a small test area in Nanjing 45 test fields in Jiangning, Nanjing for super high yield research and demonstration with precise cultivating techniques. Jiangsu Agriculture Commission organized a group of experts in rice cultivation and extension in and outside Jiangsu to measure the yield on October 26, 2010. The actual yield amounted to 799.34 kilograms per mu (12,000 kilograms per ha).
