The new acer palmatum variety Jinling Huangfeng is an ever-colored acer palmatum variety with aureus as the main ornamental feature. In late March, the buds sprout and treetops turn bright red. During September and October, the leaves mature and turn yellowish-green and treetops turn light orange, which will change into orange in middle November. The viewing period lasts for almost 160 days. The tree has broad extension prospects, with multi-resistance to insects and plant diseases.
The Research Group of Horticulture Engineering Techniques (JAAS) has long been engaged in the breeding of new ornamental acer palmatum varieties and has already developed new high quality varieties including Jinling Huangfeng. Nanjing Houchong Planting Cooperatives is specialized in colored-leaf landscape plants. The successful transfer of Jinling Huangfeng indicates the tight connection between industry, education and research. Moreover, the transfer also opens new chapter in JAAS technical transfer of ornamental plants.
