National Intellectual Property Symposium for Agricultural Academies and Universities

The First National Intellectual Property Symposium for Agricultural Academies and Universities, co-organized by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Variety Right Special Committee of Chinese Association of Agricultural Science &Technology (S&T) Management and Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), was held in Nanjing from September 14 to 15, 2011. Over 110 representatives from 20 agricultural research institutions, CAAS affiliating institutions, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), Northwest A&F University, Intellectual Property and Technical Transfer Center of Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) attended the symposium.

CAAS Vice President Wang Ren, Inspector Lin Xiangming, Director Zhu Yu of Intellectual Property Office of Jiangsu Province were invited to invited to give a keynote presentation at the symposium. The symposium was chaired by JAAS Secretary of CPC Party Committee Zhao Xihua. JAAS President Yan Shaohua made a keynote speech Improve Intellectual Property System and Promote S&T Development and introduced JAAS's efforts in intellectual property, which drew great attention from the attendants. On behalf of Variety Right Special Committee of Chinese Association of Agricultural Science &Technology (S&T) Management, JAAS Vice President Yu Wengui made a relevant speech.
 
This year is the first year for the implementation of the Twelfth Five-year Plan in China. The State Council is making great efforts in the promotion of modern seed industry development. How to enhance agricultural innovation capabilities by means of intellectual property and technology transfer is a critical issue for public research institutions. Integration of research institutions and enterprises with the link of intellectual property is becoming an important approach for the reforms of S&T innovation systems. The attendants claimed that such a symposium was necessary and timely, reflecting their wishes to strengthen the work in intellectual property.

The symposium mainly took the forms of theme-based speeches and group discussions. The attendants held extensive and in-depth discussions on the following topics: intellectual property strategy and modern agriculture development, intellectual property system construction, intellectual property right management and technical transfer, division of functions in intellectual property right management and protection of biological genetic resources (breeding materials), etc. The attendants based their discussions on the realities of their work units, discussed the existing problems and proposed suggestions.
