Outreach meeting of JAAS new japonica rice variety Ning 9108

 
Outreach meeting of JAAS new japonica rice variety Ning 9108, hosted by Jiangsu High-Tech Seed Technology Company, was held in Huai’an on February 26, 2012. Director Zhou Chunhe of Jiangsu Seeds Management Station, Director Deng Jianping of Jiangsu Plant Cultivation Station, Director Zhang Jincheng of Huai’an Agriculture Commission, Deputy Director Zhang Chuxian of JAAS Intellectual Property Division, Director Wang Cailin, breeder of Ning 9018, and other over 200 representatives attended the meeting.
 
According to the introduction of Director Wang Cailin, the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS has developed new japonica rice varieties Nanjing 46 and Nanjing 5055 in 2008 and 2011, a middle-maturing late japonica and an early-maturing late japonica, and both are suitable for planting in Jiangsu Taihu Lake, south Jiangsu and coastal areas. Ning 9108 is selected as one of national good-taste rice after Nanjing 46 and Nanjing 5055, 2 to 3 days earlier of maturing than Huai Rice 9 and a late-maturing middle japonica. It is adaptable in Huaihe area to the south and laid a solid foundation for good taste japonica rice development in Jiangsu central area.
 

 
Ning 9108 is a hybrid japonica rice variety with late maturity. It combines the high grain quality of its female parent Wuyunjing 7 and ideal plant architecture of its male parent Kanto 194. After current selections and molecular marker-assisted selections of rice stripe virus resistance and half-waxy genes, Ning 9108 was successfully bred by the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, featured by tight plant type, desirable maturity and lodging resistance. The length of the strain is about 95-100 cm; total grains amount to 130 to 140, at the maturing rate of 95% and thousand grain weight is about 26 g. In the small area trials in 2010, the total yield is 629.1 kg, 12.5% higher than Yangfu Rice 8 and 6.5% higher than Huai Rice 9. In the large area test in 2011, the average yield per mu is 614.4 kg, 5.22% higher than Huai Rice 9. Ning 9108 exhibited desirable resistances to rice stripe virus, rice blast and bacterial blight.
 
The outstanding property of Ning 9108 is its high grain quality with half waxiness, which most fits the R&D of high-quality rice varieties. In the Ninth Japonica Rice Development Forum and National Good-Taste Rice Convention in 2011, Ning 9108 won the 2nd prize of good eating quality in China, ranking 4th in the 22 varieties. The variety has high grain yield, with brown rice percentage of 85.4%, milled rice percentage of 75.2%, whole milled rice percentage of 70.8%. The gel consistency is 92 mm, and amylose content is 9%. With the organic cultivation method, the average yield is 400-450 kg per mu, with 260-300 kg of processed rice grains. At the price of 20 yuan per kg and cost of 1,000 yuan per mu, the net profit reaches 4,200-5,000 yuan per mu.
 
During the meeting, the attendants tasted the cooked rice, which is delicate, crystal, tender and smooth. The properties of Ning 9108, especially its taste and appearance, were highly recommended.
