The launching ceremony for Cotton and Canola Key Laboratory in the Lower Reaches of Yangtze River of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA, P. R. China) and the first session of the lab academic committee was held in Nanjing on March 24, 2012.
The members of the lab academic committee, chiefs of the lab and representatives of scientists, as well as leaders of JAAS attended the ceremony, which was hosted by Prof. Qi Cunkou, director of the Institute of Industrial Crops. JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong made a speech to welcome the attendants and extend his congratulations to the success of launching ceremony. Director Huang Jun of Research Management Division announced the approval document from MoA for the lab’s establishment. Prof. Zhao Xinhua, director of the Cotton Biology and Genetic Breeding Key Lab of MoA and the Research Management Division of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and Prof. Du Yonglin, deputy director of Science and Education Division of Jiangsu Agriculture Commission were invited to the meeting and made important speeches. During the meeting, the chiefs of the lab made a report on the construction, 2011 achievements and future work plans to the academic committee, who provided constructive feedbacks to the research tasks, operation mechanism and development goals.
Cotton and Canola Key Laboratory of the Lower Reaches of Yangtze River is one of the six approved regional key laboratories from MoA of JAAS. The major research goals for the lab are: establishment of an innovation center for cotton and canola breeding and cultivation in the lower reaches of Yangtze River; introduction and cultivation of elite research groups; research facilities improvement, provision of sustainable technical support to local cotton and canola industries.
