Kick-off meeting of the project Industrial Technology System of Facility Vegetables (peppers & tomatoes)

 
The kick-off meeting of the project Industrial Technology System of Facility Vegetables (peppers & tomatoes), one of the key projects of 2012 Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF), was held at JAAS on July 18, 2012. JAAS Vice President Yu Wengui, Director Huang Jun of Research Management Division, Director Zhou Jiantao of Technical Service Division, Deputy Director Zhou Na of Finance Division, Director Yang Xinping of the Institute of Vegetable Crops (IVC), IVC Secretary Tang Yuyin of CPC Party Committee, and Principal Investigator Prof. Wang Shubin were invited to the meeting. More than 70 representatives from extension sectors in regional institutes and large pepper/tomato planting areas attended the meeting.
 

 
Director Huang Jun chaired the meeting and Director Yang Xinping gave a welcome speech. Director Zhou Jiantao announced the name lists of “Executive Experts Group” and “Leadership Group for Project Demonstration”. During the meeting, Deputy Director Zhou Na of the Finance Division also stressed the fund management requirements of Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF).
 
JAAS Vice President Yu Wengui pointed out the existing problems in pepper and tomato cultivation of Jiangsu Province and put forward three requirements for the ongoing project: first, combine separated and single techniques into systematic and integrative technology through the research and development of nine sub-programs; second, accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological innovations by means of the demonstration of new varieties and technology; third, make an annual plan for each sub-program and supervise its progress. Director Huang Jun briefly reviewed the process of project application and approval and proposed all the research groups enrich the content and optimize the scheme according to the different ecological conditions of Jiangsu Province. Principal Investigator Prof. Wang Shubin introduced the background, content, and organization and implementation, etc. The demo stations were also rendered seeds of new pepper and tomato varieties.
 

 
The perennial cultivation areas of pepper and tomato in Jiangsu Province are respectively 1.2 million mu (800 km²) and 0.8 million mu (533.3 km²), with 70 % cultivated in the greenhouse. The pepper and tomato cultivation now faces many problems, such as weak disease resistances, low level of specialization, lack of portable and simple machines, low level of integration of high-efficiency safe production technology, limited applications of variety and technology integration, etc. The project experts aim at setting up technology innovation system and carrying out researches in facility peppers and tomatoes. Meanwhile, demo stations are established to provide technical support and new varieties demonstration for facility pepper and tomato cultivation in Jiangsu.
