The launching ceremony of the project “Breeding and Demonstration of New Rice Varieties with High Quality, High Yield, Wide Adaptability and Multiple Disease Resistances”, as well as the field observation, was held in Jiangyan on July 20, 2012. The project is supported by Jiangsu Agriculture Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF). JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong, Director Gu Jun of JAAS Finance Division, Director Ai Yuchun of Intellectual Property Division, Deputy Director Li Guofeng of Research Management Division, Deputy Director Li Dexin of Technical Service Division, Director Wang Yucai and Deputy Director Zhang Cunluan of Jiangyan Agriculture Commission (where the demo station is located), and other 80 scientists and technicians attended the ceremony.

Jiangyan Municipal Government attaches great importance to rice production and will make concerted efforts with relevant researchers in the implementation of the project in Jiangyan. Director Wang hoped the project would promote the development of rice industry in Jiangyan and increase farmers’ income.
Project PI, Director Wang Cailing of the Institute of Food Crops of JAAS, introduced the background, contents, objectives, and organization of the project and deployed the research tasks. Director Gu Jun stressed the fund management requirements of Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund (JASTIF). He proposed all the scientists should regulate the use of the Fund according to the budget. Prof. Zhang Hongcheng from Yangzhou University said the project was an innovative research with great creativity and vitality. All the participants would exert every effort to accomplish the project.
Finally, JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong pointed out the project would greatly increase rice yield, improve its taste and resistances to diseases, and make a breakthrough in variety breeding and demonstration, cultivation technology, and systematic management. He hoped that wide demonstration and application of the scientific results with intellectual property rights would ensure Jiangsu’s leading position in rice industry in China. After the ceremony, the directors and scientists visited Heheng test station in Jiangyan, as well as the demo station of new rice varieties in Diaoyu Town, Xinhua, where they inspected new rice varieties, such as Nanjing 5055, Nanjing 49, Ning 9108, Ning 9213, Ning 94140, etc.
