A seminar was held by Jiangsu Cooperative Organization for Vegetable Crops Innovation from December 10 to 12, 2011 in Suqian. The seminar aimed to integrate the talents and research teams and exchange the newly developed varieties, methods and achievements by Jiangsu vegetable research institutes and schools. The seminar was hosted by the Scientific Research Division and the Institute of Vegetable Crops of JAAS, undertaken by Jiangsu Horticulture Society, Suqian Agriculture Sciences Institute and Sucheng Vegetable Research Center of JAAS. Over 100 representatives from 20 units including regional institutes of JAAS, vegetable research institutes from Nanjing, Suzhou, Huai’an and Zhenjiang, Haimen Institute of Agriculture attended the meeting. Vice President Chang Youhong of JAAS, Associate Dean Liu Weidong of Jinling Technology College, Associate Dean Chen Xuehao of the School of Horticulture and Plant Protection of Yangzhou University, Deputy Director Xie Yongsheng of Suqian Agriculture Commission, Director Yang Xingping of the Institute of Vegetable Crops and other chiefs were invited to the seminar.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Deputy Director Chen Xin of the Institute of Vegetable Crops of JAAS. JAAS Vice President Chang Youhong made a keynote speech on the importance of vegetable industry, existing problems and the necessity to strengthen cooperative research. Director Yang Xingping of the Institute of Vegetable Crops analyzed the current situation of Jiangsu vegetable industry and relevant technical requirements. He hoped that the vegetable scientific institutions should spare no efforts to work together, and take full advantage of JASTIF (Jiangsu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Fund) to tackle the key technical problems. Deputy Director Xie Yongsheng of Suqian Agriculture Commission introduced in his speech the importance of vegetable industry in local agriculture development. Director Chen Lichang of the Suqian Agricultural Sciences Institute briefly introduced his horticulture research laboratory and expressed his intent for further cooperation.
Twenty-eight representatives from different working units exchanged their views during and after the seminar. The speeches covered various research areas including germplasm resource collection, crop improvement, seedling and cultivation, plant protection and biotechnology. Deputy Director Chen Xin of the Institute of Vegetable Crops made a summary speech to stress the importance of vegetable industry in Jiangsu agriculture, new innovation results, further research tasks and the establishment of strategic alliances for technology innovations of the vegetable industry.
After the seminar, the participants had a guided tour to Suqian Hongrun Agriculture & Husbandry Company, Jiangsu Lvgang Modern Agriculture Company and Jiangsu Test Station of Ruikesiwang Seeds.
