Construction Plan to Build Suqian into A Modern Eco-agriculture Demonstration City Passed expert evaluation

The evaluation meeting for Construction Plan to Build Suqian into A Modern Eco-agriculture Demonstration City (hereafter referred as the Plan) was held in Nanjing on March 2, 2012. JAAS Vice President Zheng Jianchu attended the meeting. On behalf on the compliers of the Plan, Liu Huazhou, director of the Institute of Agricultural Economy and Information, introduced the contents of the Plan.


Prof. Lu Junchao and other experts of Jiangsu Agricultural Commission evaluated the Plan and listened to the work report from the compliers. The Plan follows the guidelines of No.1 Central Government Document in recent years and thoroughly implements the scientific outlooks of development. In answer to Several Proposals on Making Greater Breakthroughs for Suqian’s Development of Jiangsu Provincial Government and the development needs of modern eco-agriculture, the Plan presented the construction strategies with advanced techniques, reasonable frameworks and original designs which fit the local conditions.

The city of Suqian covers an area of 8,555 square kilometers (77.6% of land and 22.4% of water area), with a population of 5,460,000. Since the establishment of the city, the municipal government has placed the emphasis on scientific innovation and industry upgrade.
 


In December, 2010, Jiangsu Provincial Government pointed out in Several Proposals on Making Greater Breakthroughs for Suqian’s Development that, the construction of Six Projects (agricultural science and technology, modern agriculture industrial park, market system, farm produce processing park, eco-circular agriculture) and Six Industrial Bases (rice, vegetables ,horticulture, fishery, animal husbandry and poplar) should be strengthened and large-scale farm produce trade market should be accelerated. The Proposals called for making full use of the ecological advantages in Suqian and vigorous development of eco-tourism and village tours.  
 
Aimed at accelerating the implementation of Several Proposals on Making Greater Breakthroughs for Suqian’s Development, a city design & construction symposium sponsored by JAAS and Suqian municipal government, was held in Nanjing on February, 2011. Huang Lixin, standing member of Jiangsu Committee of CPC and vice governor of Jiangsu Province, proposed the transition from traditional agriculture to modern eco-agriculture, the development of efficient facility agriculture and full use of land, farm produce and ecological resources.
